Details

Hiroshi Yoshida began his artistic career as an oil painter and watercolorist. An avid outdoorsman and mountaineer, Yoshida took full advantage of his travels, capturing the natural wonders he encountered, all painted en plein air. In this captivating piece, Yoshida presents a dramatic mountain scene set in the Swiss Alps.

The Gorner Glacier, the third-largest glacier in the Swiss Alps, serves as the backdrop for this composition. Yoshida places the viewer directly within the vast, rugged terrain, offering access to a vista that would typically require great effort to experience. The composition unfolds with towering, snow-capped boulders and billowing cliffs, alive with the rhythm of the wind. The energy of the scene barely fits within the confines of the painting, as the aim of the peaks appear to rise well beyond the confines of the artist’s composition.

Connoisseur's Note

Serious collectors of Hiroshi Yoshida's prints have increasingly turned to his oil and watercolor works to round out their collections. As a result, Yoshida's paintings have become notably rare in the market. When they do appear, they now command prices two to three times higher than they did only a few years ago. This painting is signed with the artist's distinctive signature in the lower left corner and is framed in an elegant silver-gilt wood frame.
