Details
Hiroshi Yoshida started his artistic career as an oil painter and watercolorist. Also an avid outdoorsman and mountaineer, Yoshida took full advantage of his travels and painted the important natural treasures he visited—all executed in the field, utilizing the technique of plein air painting. In this stunning work, Yoshida presents us a striking Japanese landscape.
The scene is divided in half: a juxtaposition of textured mountainous forms in the foreground artfully transitioning into a mysterious mist of fog and light above the glistening inland sea. The background is rendered with a strong atmospheric quality. The foreground’s active rugged terrain rendered in lively brushstrokes animates the composition and brings it a delicate balance of two opposing forces. Typically, Yoshida’s paintings rely on one of these two stylistic decisions, but in this painting, the artist successfully explores both techniques within this sole composition.
Connoisseur's Note
Serious Hiroshi Yoshida print collectors have now turned to the artist’s oil and watercolor works to fill out their collections. Consequently, Yoshida paintings have become quite scarce in the marketplace. When they do emerge, they command twice to three times the amount they were selling for only a couple of years ago. This untypically large-scale painting is signed in the artist’s distinct signature at the lower left. The painting comes in an attractive hand-carved wood frame.
